As one of Europe’s leading universities the Ulster University (UU) is constantly pushing the boundaries of education to order to help prepare the next generation of leaders and innovators for work in the future in an ever-changing world.
People & Culture
Central to this is making sure that its People & Culture team are equipped with the highest standard of ability to engage and inspire their own people. For this reason, the director of People and Culture, Damien McAllister, selected Lightbulb Teams to come and create a bespoke and immersive charity team building event that would not only be fun, but would truly teach the team new skills, tools, and techniques that would help them raise the bar and move the needle on the results that they’re getting in their people strategy.
Held at its Coleraine Campus, the event brief was to give staff time away from their busy email inboxes and their ever-lengthening to-do lists, to help push a reset button on who they are and what they’re achieving.
Charitable Team Building
Ulster Uni believed that a really powerful way of doing this was to enlist Lightbulb Teams to create a charitable, philanthropic give-back team build that would not only teach the People & Culture team essential skills around communication, collaboration, resilience, problem-solving and thinking outside the box, but also to practically give them the opportunity to test those skills and abilities. The Water Works programme was an amazing way for them to do this and on the day the UU team managed to create 15 water filters. Each filter will provide fresh, lifesaving water for 300 people for two whole years and once in situ the team will receive photographs of the end recipients in Uganda.
For People & Culture professionals, it’s really essential that they see the world through the eyes of their colleagues and their end users. The Waterworks programme is an unequalled way of doing this as many of the team are blindfolded throughout – so they need to rely on their team members and their colleagues to help lead, guide and direct so that they can build a water filter that will truly save, change and improve people’s lives in the developing world.

Thank-you Ulster Uni
Lightbulb Teams’ founder David Meade said: “My primary career was always as an academic before I went into the world of business and University of Ulster was my alma mater. I have such a warm connection and affiliation with this institution. It built me as a person and as a professional and to be invited back again and again to work with the People & Culture team is incredibly important and special to me.
“I want to take a moment to thank the entire People & Culture team for all of their hard work and commitment and for leaning into the challenge of the activity so willingly. I’m excited to see their reactions as they get the pictures of the end recipients and see what their hard work on the day has achieved.
“For me, people and culture is all about making a difference and having an impact, and this team truly did that.”
